Scars Portraits

Scars - Portraits of Personal Journeys

Click here to listen to CBC Radio interview about the project

The intent of this photographic art project is to show the resiliency of the human body and the life experience and strength that come from meeting a significant health challenge.

The project focuses on photographing persons with scars because they provide visual evidence of a person's very personal experience and victory over a particular struggle. Some participants have referred to their scar as their "badge of honour". The scar provides visual evidence of the person's capacity to pull through and heal and the human body's incredible resiliency.

A second aspect of the project is to document the impact of medicine and surgical techniques at this point in time. On the one hand, surgical techniques possible today would have been undreamt of ten or twenty years ago. On the other hand, surgery can still be highly invasive. However, as science progresses, it is reasonable to expect that over time, many procedures will be replaced by more sophisticated and less invasive ones.
